Why do I love photography and what drives me......
I would describe myself first and foremost as a lifestyle and family photographer. I love capturing families having real raw moments. Those little candid moments laughing, crying, being silly and even those cute little things our kids are into or love in the season of their lives, maybe a favorite toy or that princess dress they refuse to take off for even a moment. Pictures in general bring us back in time.
... because every picture tells a story...
Take these photos for instance, it is of my mother and I. I was not raised by her and only had photos to remember her by or know what she looked like. Photography to me is a memory wheather good or bad. One thing I've learned throughout my life is to keep moving forward but always remember and photography helps with that. The pictures are old, worn, and ripped but still so precious to me! I did find my mother after 22 years of my life but only had a phone and social media relationship with her and unfortunately she passed away due to cancer before I got to meet her in person. Learning to let go is hard. Change has had a major impact on my life and my growth as a photographer. It drives my desire to document life. I’ve always been greatly affected by it. It’s difficult, yet refreshing, for me to come to terms with the fact that nothing stays the same. But as scary as change is for me, it excites me the same way. Since becoming a mother these thoughts of change have only become more evident to me. I waited so long to become a mother that the thought of my children growing, leaves me with a sense of grievance. At the same time, I’m PROUD of their achievements & growth. I know that there are other parents who feel the same way. Like, you get so caught up in your daily routine that you feel as though the end of the day may never comes. You feel like you’re working your life away raising kids or at a 9-5 or both and all you want to do is lay your head down and rest your eyes, but then the end of the day comes and it went by too quickly. I wish I could bottle up these moments and keep them forever. Photography helps me do that. I’ve lived my entire life with the urge to create and document. History, especially the stories of my own family, fascinates me. I have always loved learning about my family’s heritage and reliving memories through old photographs. The realization that nothing stays the same drives my need to photograph my family and my children, and knowing that photographs serve a priceless purpose in other families as well helps me create images for them that will serve as heirlooms and carry on their legacy for their family’s future generations. In years to come, grandchildren and great-grandchildren may someday ask to see photographs of their family, and wouldn't it just be sad if there were few or none to share? Having these images brings the family together again as they look back on their lives. Don't let life pass and you look back, wondering why you didn't take the time to have family pictures taken. Don't make excuses or put it off any longer. You can't go back in time for a redo!
If you've been thinking about having family portraits taken, do it! Do it for your children. Your children won't notice the roots, a few extra pounds, a smile line or even a fading tan, but I guarantee they will be disappointed when they are older and there are no family photos to share with their children.
